I’ve been noticing a pattern lately with the types of couples we capture. A good pattern. The best kind of pattern. Warm, kind, laid back, humble people. I love these kinds of people. They make our jobs so easy and carefree. Jess + Eric are no exception. I was so excited when they reached out to us last fall about capturing their Semple Mansion Wedding in Jess’ home state, Minnesota. The couple lives in Brooklyn, so it was a travel wedding for them and us. We knew we wanted to make travel a part of their film for this reason — and also because Jess is a big fan of traveling. But, before I delve further into their wedding, I have to mention that Eric came to us with this awesome (albeit, devious) idea of telling Jess they wouldn’t be able to hire us for their wedding… and then surprising her with the news at Christmas. Genius! I had to of course get in on the fun, so we made Eric a little super 8 reel which held a few feet of leader (fancy word for white paper that looks like film) with a secret message announcing Birdhouse would be capturing their wedding in April. It was so fun to create and Jess was completely surprised!
April came and we boarded the plane for Minneapolis, arriving a day early just to sink in and soak up the vibes of the city. I had no idea how much Minneapolis would remind me of one of my favorite little cities, Harrisburg (where the original, real birdhouse resides), and how much I would love it, in turn. Minneapolis is filled with bridges, bicycles, dogs and their dog-loving owners and industrial buildings. I just rattled off a list of some of my favorite things ever, period. Needless to say, we had so much fun walking the streets and exploring with our cameras. On Jess + Eric’s wedding day, we were greeted with an overwhelming sense of warmth and calm, vibes which fit the aesthetics of Semple Mansion so perfectly. While Jess got ready, I captured her BHLDN details and Mark captured the guys shooting a few games of pool. Eric’s dad officiated a most personal and perfectly written ceremony and the couple rendezvoused right after in a vintage mustang around the streets and lakes of the city. This is a wedding we’ll truly never forget and I’m so grateful to know these two and have witnessed the love they share.
